Graham and Leanne O’Hara’s home has been a beacon of Christmas joy for more than 17 years, but after this festive season the lights will go out.
The Tugun couple, aged 75 and 64, began decorating their house after their son, Jai, saw another street win a Christmas lights competition.
Mr O’Hara, now 29, said it had become too much to keep the tradition going.
“The more you have the more things can go wrong, the more expensive it is, and we just want to enjoy Christmas ourselves,” he said.
The family won the Gold Coast City Council Christmas lights competition in 2013, and last year was listed eighth in the Bulletin’s top 10 Christmas lights list.
Mr O’Hara said the biggest expense was batteries.
“It feels like we’re constantly buying them,” he said.
But Mr O’Hara said he still did not have an answer to the one question everyone wants to know.
“I have no idea how many lights there are,” he said.
“If I had to guess, I’d say somewhere close to 200,000.”
