There was a strange sight at the Sydney Opera House on Sunday as a woman was lifted into the air attached to 20,000 colourful balloons.
The feat was part of a nine- hour performance for the inaugural Antidote Festival, and saw artist Noëmi Lakmaier fly through the air.
The centrepiece artwork, titled Cherophobia, has only been shown one other time, in London as part of the Unlimited Festival.
Lakmaier said the artwork focused on the ideas of desire, restraint and control.
“My most important motivation for all my work, including Cherophobia, is the continuous search for a visual language; one which is able to express all that, which cannot be expressed in spoken or written words,” she said.
“It started as simply an idea, an image in my head, and I just knew I had to make it a reality; at the time I had no idea how challenging this would be and it then took almost 10 years of research and development before it was first realised in 2016.
“Cherophobia means the fear of happiness, and for me, this is reflected in Cherophobia the performance.
“It is a piece of contrasts and opposites, lightness and weight, restraint and freedom, childlike wonder and meticulous scientific planning.”
Lakmaier said there was no trial of the stunt, as she doesn’t believe in rehearsals for live art.
