A burst water main gave a courier driver a nasty shock yesterday when it caused a sinkhole to open up in the road and his van nosedived straight into it.
Allied Express’s Larry Cavallaro, 64, had been on his way to work about 6am.
He said he had been in the left lane in Crockford St, Port Melbourne, and noticed it was submerged, but went to make his daily turn into the petrol station.
“A car in front of me in the right-hand lane went through. I was cruising along and next thing, bang,” he said.
“The van dropped down and came to a sudden halt.”
His van’s right rear wheel was left hanging high above the road.
“A few more inches and it would have been a proverbial hole down to China,” Mr Cavallaro said.
Despite the surprise, Mr Cavallaro, a courier driver for 15 years, remained sanguine.
“It was just a bit of excitement,” he said, as he waited for a replacement van.
“Watch out for potholes in the road,” he advised.
A VicRoads spokesman said a burst water main had caused the road to collapse.
