Lighter, cooler and stab-resistant vests will offer better protection to some of Queensland’s frontline officers – the police service dogs.
Following the death of Queensland Police dog Waco earlier this year due to heat exhaustion, new and improved vests have been provided to the four-legged officers.
Senior Sergeant Chad McLeod said the new vests now allowed room for cooling packs to keep the dogs cooler in extreme heat.
“The consideration the whole time is whether the vests can be used all year round,” he said.
“Places like Townsville and Cairns … the heat and weight of the packs is a lot for a dog.
“Twelve months ago we lost a dog to heat exhaustion so that was obviously a very important factor for these vests.”
Police Minister Mark Ryan said the dogs would now be as protected as their two-legged colleagues.
“When the dogs are fitted with the harness they will have a similar level of protection as an officer does when wearing a stab resistant body armour vest,” he said.
“The harness weighs just over 1kg and is designed so it will not impair agility and speed.”
