Hutan the Sumatran tiger had a date with the dentist yesterday, opening wide for veterinary dental specialist Stephen Coles to check his massive, and rather sharp, pearly whites.
Dr Coles examined a root canal in one of the tiger’s lower canine teeth, which fortunately got a positive nod from the dentist.
Three other root canals were put in to further help prevent infection. Melbourne Zoo head vet Michael Lynch managed the procedure, checking the tiger’s eyes, ears and heart.
As part of a training program planned by carnivore keepers, Dr Lynch also shaved some fur from Hutan’s tail to enable blood samples to be collected should the seven-year-old endangered big cat fall ill in future.
