Look but don’t touch – that is the message Guide Dogs Australia hopes to spread by introducing learner coats on training puppies.
Puppy Development Advisor Melissa Tulk said for many people it seemed a harmless natural instinct to pat learning dogs.
“People trying to pat the pups when we are out on a training day may seem harmless, but it truly is a huge distraction to the dog learning,” she said.
About 600 dogs train to become guide dogs in Australia every year and they all start out with a “Puppy Raiser”, who houses and trains the dog until they are 18 months old.
Guide Dogs Queensland covers the cost of food and vet expenses and also provides all the equipment needed. “We are really after people just to introduce the dog into a home environment and teach them household manners,” Ms Tulk said.
