Walkabout Creek, population 15, is on board for the push to bring back Mick.
“Never say never,’’ says Frank Wust, bush publican in the tiny outback Queensland town of McKinlay.
“We’ve lost our irreverent Aussie larrikin spirit, our sense of a fair go, the ability to take the piss out of each other and have a laugh. Everyone is too serious. It’s time to bring back Dundee.’’
Last October, the locals were sworn to secrecy when the cast flew in to film the viral marketing campaign at Adels Grove, 319km northwest of Mount Isa. Some scenes were also shot at Mission Beach in far north Queensland.
“It’s such a great storyline, with all those amazing Australian actors,” said Mr Wust. “They are hilarious, imagine how good it could be.
“It’s hard to believe Mick the bushman is lost. Maybe, like our cultural soul, he’s just gone walkabout.’’
McKinlay, on the open plains of the nation’s dried-up ancient inland sea, is the spiritual home of Crocodile Dundee. In 1985, the township – one pub, a CWA hall and a service station – was taken over by Paul Hogan, cast and crew. Tourists still make the pilgrimage to see where the low-budget smash hit was made, 1596km northwest of Brisbane.
