A five-year-old Hampton East boy will continue his fight against the odds when he takes part in a 3km walk at the Melbourne Marathon this Sunday.
Eric Dargan struggles to walk after a dramatic start to life. He contracted an infection when he was born premature at 28 weeks.
The Cerebral Palsy Education Centre’s Robyn Somerville said doctors suspected meningitis and immediately put Eric on antibiotics.
“For two months he was fighting for his life in the neonatal unit until the doctors took regular scans of Eric’s brain to access damage from the infection,” Ms Somerville said.
At 38 weeks Eric had an MRI where his devastated parents were told he had cystic periventricular leukomalacia, a type of brain damage that involves the white matter of the brain.
