The people behind Australia’s oldest wig store really are the bigwigs in town.
Melbourne family enterprise Creative Wigs has come out on top in the Lord Mayor’s Commendations for small business.
Joel Grosman runs the Swanston St business with mum Diane and his 88-year-old grandfather known to everyone simply as “Mr Lourie”.
Mr Lourie founded the company in 1957 when, as a chemist, a salesman offered human-hair ponytails.
Mr Lourie soon set up a “wig room” in his pharmacy at the corner of Bourke and Swanston streets.
The current shop has more than 2500 styles of fashion and costume wigs, extensions and headpieces for cancer patients. Wigs are either synthetic or human hair from around the world. “Every day is different,” Mr Grosman said.
