A Gold Coaster behind a world-first wall-mounted foldaway barbecue is sizzling with sales, a US patent and accolades a year after launching.
Gilston plumber Ryan Martin has sold 2500 SpaceGrill BBQ after dreaming up the idea one day on his deck.
The 45-year-old said he was frustrated with barbecues taking up so much space when not in use so he started designing wall-mounted, foldaway options.
“I thought why couldn’t I have a barbecue that when you are done with it, it’s out of the way,” he said.
The result is the fully stainless steel SpaceGrill which sells for $1399 a pop.
It won an Australian Good Design Award last year and has started to get people salivating in the UK where it has been short-listed as a 2017 Design Week Awards finalist in the furniture and product category.
“In Australia we’ve sold 2500 and haven’t really got it out there. At $1399 they are not a cheap barbecue but it’s full stainless steel and when it folds down it captures all the fat. America is the logical next place for expansion. Americans are big barbecuers.”
The SpaceGrill is gas-powered but an electric prototype is being designed.
