It's not often that Batman is thought of as a joker – but Uber’s very own version of the superhero certainly is.
Meet Freshwater’s Syed Yaqoub – retail security guard by day, superhero protector to Uber passengers by night.
Mr Yaqoub took on the persona of the Caped Crusader shortly after he started working for the ride-hailing service just over a year ago.
Along with greeting passengers in a Batman costume, Mr Yaqoub’s black Mitsubishi Lancer has LED-lit doors with the bat symbol, a Batman projection on the roof, bat stickers and music from Batman soundtracks.
A lifelong fan of Batman, Mr Yaqoub said this was the perfect way to express himself as the superhero. “This is one of the few jobs in the world where I can dress as Batman and not get fired,” he said.
“All the other places I’ve worked there is a dress code. For me, the only dress code should be wearing a bat costume.”
Mr Yaqoub, 32, said a few passengers did “freak” at the sight of Batman in the early days of his venture, which prompted him to change his Uber order name to “Bruce Wayne” and remove his mask when picking people up. But otherwise he said the response had been overwhelmingly positive.
“I get comments like, ‘Thank you Batman for saving the day’, ‘Thank you for saving us from The Joker’, ‘Next time I will call you instead of the cops’,” he said.
