In the fight against crime, SA Police have employed a new A-team to help catch the bad guys.
They’re only small but Axe, Arko, Ash and Archie are already showing signs of being top notch crime-fighting police dogs. The 10-week-old German Shepherd pups are the first litter to be locally bred from a retired police dog and police hope this will help boost training success rates.
Dog Operations Unit operations manager Senior Sergeant Kurt Newcombe said the sire of the pups was retired police dog Oscar. “(He’s) a very opinionated and strong- willed dog and his pups are no different,” he said. “The apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree.”
Historically, police have seen a “reasonably high” failure rate of dogs passing training and getting into the force.
But Sen Sgt Newcombe hoped the pups being bred from a working police dog would have better results. “We hope to get some successful results with the A-litter,” he said.
“We’ll put them through a training regimen designed to bring out those desirable traits in our working dogs.”
