It looks like a bug car, has a surround-sound system, pulsing lights and wings.
Part art and part science, the Utility Kinetic Insect is a unique machine created in a Coburg workshop by Make Mob, a loose band of 12 engineers, designers and other craftspeople.
Project leader Callan Morgan, who has a background in circus equipment, said the collective wanted to invent something innovative and distinctive.
“I was inspired by nature, so there’s mimicry, but we’re also learning from nature, too,’’ he said.
It will make its full debut later this week, as part of Melbourne Knowledge Week, then will be shipped to the US for the Burning Man Festival in Nevada in August.
UKI has a definite Mad Max feel. It was built on a modified four-wheel-drive chassis and has a wingspan of 6m. The electric-powered beast can travel at 10kmh for up to seven hours and is piloted by two or three technicians, one to work the sound mixing desk if needed.
UKI will be on display at the Decode event on Friday night at 361 Little Lonsdale St in the city.
