Creating  a quality comic book for children aged 7 to 12 is something that has played on Mike Barry’s mind.
Now this North Balgowlah dad is on the verge of having his sci-fi adventure graphic novel, called Action Tank, published.
“There something about the energy and colour in the storytelling with comics that really appeals to people,” he said. “But what started for children became a thing consumed by adults. Now there are only a few things (comics) my kids can read.”
The writer, illustrator and colourist has penned a 100-page graphic novel about a boy who finds himself on the other side of the Solar System and must rely on his brains, his courage and the advice of a mysterious talking unicorn guy if he wants to get home in time for his mum’s spaghetti carbonara.
“Along the way the boy discovers he’s been drafted into a centuries old Intergalactic Space Trooper Squadron, and that he’s also in possession of the most powerful piece of technology in the universe – The Action Tank,” he said. Barry felt this kind of (graphic) communication engaged the mind to create a relationship between the images and the text.
Yet, paradoxically, he said while readers needed to use their brains to enjoy a comic, it was not hard to do.
That said, he still believed children deserved material that did not patronise them.
