Her smile says it all. After battling cancer throughout her pregnancy – and being told she was risking her own life by going ahead with the birth – Elle Halliwell is the proudest mum in the world.
The Sydney journalist’s son Tor Felix was born on Tuesday, measuring 3.1kg and 48cm, and is in perfect health.
But Elle, sadly, is not. In May she was diagnosed with leukaemia and told she needed chemotherapy to save her life. Then just 48 hours later she found out she was pregnant with her first child.
Selflessly, and with remarkable courage, Elle decided to keep the baby and postpone cancer treatment. But now Tor is born, the 31-year-old must take chemotherapy drugs immediately.
Her extraordinary story of courage captured worldwide attention.
“Now the next challenge begins but I am feeling pretty positive and I have a lot to be happy for,” she said.
