If life begins at 40, then Fred the green tree frog is ready to hop to it.
But the first four decades of perhaps Australia’s oldest amphibian are already a ribbitting tale.
He was rescued in 1977 by a three-year-old who would grow up to become a TV zoologist. Chris Humfrey found Fred climbing the walls of a toilet block while on holiday in Coffs Harbour, and has raised him since.
For 24 years, Fred was a star of Humfrey’s Wild Action travelling zoo, where he was introduced to thousands of kindy kids.
In retirement he continues to display a calm demeanour, except at dinner time when he gorges on an insect smorgasbord.
He received a mealworm cup cake for his birthday, and he can still put away a dead mouse or two.
