Meet Bronson the “bloodhound” — this gentle giant is every bit a lifesaver.
The six-year-old mastiff saved cocker spaniel Sophi by giving her the blood needed after she ate rat poison.
Just as the human blood bank needs donors, the Canine Blood Bank at the University of Melbourne Vet Hospital also needs the owners of large-breed dogs to volunteer pooches like Bronson to ensure its 24-hour emergency and critical care has the supplies needed to save lives.
To mark the World Health Organisation’s Blood Donor Day tomorrow, the hospital is calling for dogs larger than 25kg that are able to sit still for 10-15 minutes, with a known health history, to try their paws at lifesaving.
