It may have smelt like “a garbage can when it’s full” but that did not stop Redlynch teen Joshua Hanslow getting up close and personal with this floral celebrity.
Hannibal the titan arum became the star attraction at the Cairns Botanic Gardens in Edge Hill when it began blooming on Saturday.
The bloom, also known as the corpse flower, only stays open for two or three days and 13-year-old Joshua joined a line of interested viewers along with mum Libby to check it out on Saturday afternoon.
“It’s pretty unusual,” he said. “It’s really stinky.”
The odour has been described as being like rotting meat and in full bloom it can reach up to 3m tall.
This was the first time in six years Hannibal has bloomed.
