While most of us fight tooth and nail to avoid the dentist’s drill, snow leopard Leon was a perfect patient.
Melbourne Zoo vet Dr Sarah Frith, with dental specialist Dr Steve Coles, yesterday gave the big cat a filling on a faulty tooth.
Dr Frith said Leon, just shy of 16, might have snapped the tooth due to his advancing years. “As cats become older their teeth become more brittle and they break just like human teeth,” she said. “He was on to us, but he was relaxed for a snow leopard as they are pretty sensitive.
“The good news is the snapped tooth was caught early by keepers and is still perfectly healthy.”
While sedated, the senior cat also had a general check-up on his eyes, ears and joints.
Dr Frith said an X-ray revealed mild arthritis in Leon’s spine, but he was otherwise in good health.
