The Gold Coast loves good coffee. The Gold Coast loves bikinis. To Scott Keogh, combining the two seemed obvious.

Mr Keogh is the owner of Bikini Baristas, a cafe in Surfers Paradise which lives up to its name.

He drew inspiration from the famous Meter Maids who parade through Surfers Paradise topping up parking meters while wearing gold bikinis.

The hole-in-the-wall cafe is down an alley off Orchid Avenue and fittingly one of the first hires was 20-year-old Texan Anna Choate, who did a stint as a Meter Maid on arrival six months ago.

Miss Choate said she always received tips in her new role when doing deliveries. “People just seem to appreciate you coming up to their business in a bikini,” she said. “I love it and I get the best reactions.”

Mr Keogh, who owns the tenancy where his “gimmick” cafe is based, said he saw something similar in Washington DC but it was “lewd” with girls in lingerie.

“There will be a few people who will have their nose out of joint but we keep it classy,” he said.

“And our coffee is actually cheaper and probably better.”

Mr Keogh said the staff always wore aprons – though they are backless – with bikinis no different to what was seen on the beach every day.

“I’m a big fan of the Meter Maids, they’re great for the Gold Coast and you can’t deny 60 years of history,” he said.

Surfers Paradise Alliance CEO Mike Winlaw said it would be interesting to see how the business fared.

“If it’s something they can sustain, good luck to them,” he said.

“You only have to stand in the mall to see the number of bikinis going up and down, so they will fit right in with the daytime atmosphere.”
