There were moments he was certain he would die, there were other times when Warren MacDonald was determined to fight on.
For two days the 31-year-old lay trapped under a one-tonne rock after a freak fall while hiking up Mt Bowen on Hinchinbrook Island.
Twenty years on, the team of men who came to his aid and pulled off one of the most epic rescues in their careers were reunited with the inspirational double amputee for a special night in Cairns yesterday.
“I feel like things have come a long way for me, I feel like a lot’s changed for me and it’s in no small part because of all these guys pulling me out,” Mr MacDonald said.
Despite losing both legs in the accident, Mr MacDonald has gone on to take on several major mountains and his story of survival featured on an episode of the Discovery Channel series I Shouldn’t Be Alive.
