Dave Ball sent his surfing-mad daughter a text last weekend warning her not to head out at Bells Beach because the breaks were too big.
But Ang didn’t get it. The 14-year-old was already out in the water, carving it up with her best friend, Bella.
The pair made short work of the near 4m swell, leaving hundreds of spectators gobsmacked.
“It was frothin’,’’ Ang said. “Bella rang me and said ‘C’mon, it’s pumping out there’, so we just headed straight out.’’
They were the only girls among just a brave few willing to face the towering sets.
What makes the achievement even more remarkable is that less than four years ago, Ang was wheelchair-bound, her hips in plaster after contracting an infection regarded as a one-in-500,000 chance. She still heads to hospital for regular check-ups.
Surfing Victoria’s high-performance coach, Cahill Bell-Warren, who also braved the swell, said the girls’ efforts were something to behold.
