If you’re out on the water this weekend, you might catch seven-year-old Carter Borg cruising around in his blue Viti wing boat.
Dad Chris Borg, 36, who works in the boating industry, had the bathtub racer or “wing boat’’ for about eight years before he swapped the engine for a less powerful motor and passed it on to his son.
“He was a little bit apprehensive at first as it took a little bit of getting used to but now I can’t get him out,” said the Coombabah father.
“He’s been around boats his whole life and now he’s got his own and it’s really exciting for the both of us.”
The father and son duo take the wing boat out on the Broadwater around the Gold Coast every weekend and during the holidays mainly for some fun but also a bit of steering practice.
The budding youngster from Arundel State School plans to enter the junior class for the Australian power boat association competition next year and keep honing his skills on the water.
When asked how he felt about having his own boat, Carter replied, “It’s pretty awesome!”
The boat was christened “Viti” which means Fiji.
