Turtle the dog and Ari the cat are two very spoiled pets who will be well looked after over the Christmas period — and they’re encouraging other pet owners to do the same.
Animals left on their own could suffer from a lack of food, water and basic care, and are also at risk of serious injury — an offence under the Animal Welfare Act.
Ark Animal Hospital veterinarian Dr Stephen Cutter said pet owners should leave instructions for the pet’s caretaker about food, shelter, health issues and vet support this Christmas.
“Also be sure your pet has a microchip so you can be reunited if it does run away,” he said.
Consider that pets may also be stressed at this time of year by loud noises, including thunderstorms and fireworks. “Dogs have acute hearing, so explosions sound louder to them, as do high frequencies such as shrieks and whistles inaudible to humans,” Dr Cutter said.
