While Australia was tucking into its Christmas Day lunch, Bega Cheese chairman Barry Irvin was working to win Vegemite from one of the world’s biggest snack food companies.
The spoils of the surprise deal — which involved small teams from Bega Cheese, its long-time corporate adviser Kidder Williams and law firm Addisons hammering out an agreement with the local arm of Mondelez International — were offered up to the public yesterday.
Bega will buy Vegemite and a suite of other brands from US-based Mondelez International, the maker of Cadbury chocolate and Oreo biscuits.
The $460 million deal will return the nation’s most famous food item to Australian ownership for the first time in more than 80 years.
“It’s a proud day for a country boy,” Mr Irvin told Business Daily.
“To grow the company to a point where it acquires Vegemite and the other brands is something to be very proud of and I am sure all of our 8000 shareholders will be very proud as well. It’s a great thing.
“There was no break over Christmas Day or Boxing Day but all good things take effort.”
Mr Irvin said Vegemite still had plenty of room for growth and Bega was open to introducing new product lines.
“We will deliver the product that Australians love,” he said.
“In terms of the future, if the marketing team can come up with new ideas to enthuse the consumer to buy the existing product or an evolution to an additional product — we would never change the core product — then of course we will be thinking about that.”
