Ita Buttrose is an Australian journalist and businesswoman and one of Australia's leading media personalities. Buttrose’s career began after she left school aged 15 and got a job as a copy girl at the Women's Weekly. She then served a cadetship on the Daily and Sunday Telegraph in the women's section and by the time she was 23, she was the women's editor. Ita Buttrose was the founding editor of ‘Cleo’ magazine, launched in 1972, which gained notoriety for being the first Australian women’s magazine to feature non-frontal nude male centrefolds. She was also editor of ‘The Australian Women's Weekly’, editor in chief of the Sydney ‘Daily Telegraph’ and Sydney ‘Sunday Telegraph’ and the ‘Sun-Herald’ in Sydney and editor and founder of ‘Ita’ magazine. She was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1979, and became an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 1988. She was the first woman to receive the Harnett Medal for community service and achievements in publishing, journalism, radio and television. She was named Variety Club's Personality of the Year in 1984, Australasian Academy of Broadcast, Arts and Sciences for most promising Newcomer to Radio, also in 1984, and in 1993, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation Australian of the Year.
