The Family Murders were a series of killings that took place in the late 1970s and 1980s in Adelaide, South Australia. The victims were five young men, who were kidnapped, drugged, sexually assaulted, tortured and murdered by an alleged criminal network known as ‘The Family’. The Family is believed to comprise of up to twelve high-profile homosexual men, and were responsible for the abduction and rape of up to 200 boys, and the murder of five people during a 10-year period between 1973 and 1983. The group was uncovered by detectives investigating the murder of 15-year-old Richard Kelvin in 1983. The deaths of four others - Mark Langley, Alan Barnes, Neil Muir and Peter Stogneff - have been linked to the group, most notably through a 1988 coronial inquest. In 1984 accountant Bevan Spencer von Einem was convicted of murdering Kelvin, and sentenced to life imprisonment at Yatala Labour Prison. In 1989 he was charged with murdering two other victims, Alan Barnes and Mark Langley, but the charges were withdrawn when some evidence was ruled inadmissible in the Supreme Court.  To this day, only the identity of Family member Bevan von Einem has been revealed, although police list at least three other core members directly involved in the murders.
