Jack Thompson is an actor and a major figure in Australian cinema. He was born in 1940 in Manly, Sydney and was educated at the University of Queensland. Thompson began his acting career starring in the soap opera series ‘Motel’ and first gained prominence playing the lead role in the spy drama series, ‘Spyforce’. His feature film debut was in ‘Fever Heat’, but he did not become well known as a movie actor until he appeared in ‘Sunday Too Far Away’ in 1974. Thompson went on to star in hit films such as ‘Burke and Wills’ and ‘The Man From Snowy River’, for which earned international acclaim. Thompson gained notoriety in 1972 for appearing as the first nude male centrefold in 'Cleo' magazine. In 1980 Thompson was first honoured as Best Actor from the Australian Film Institute and then Best Supporting Actor from the Cannes Festival for his performance in ‘Breaker Morant’. He has also starred in international films such as ‘Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil’ and ‘Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones’. He was the recipient of a Living Legend Award at the 2005 Inside Film Awards.
