They say you only get one good horse and a decent dog in a lifetime but cattleman Ken Connelly can’t help but chuckle.
After a lifetime roping brumbies across Victoria’s sprawling Alpine district, he’s been far luckier.
“I guess I’ve just proved them all wrong,” he said.
The 73-year-old enjoys life from a humble timber cottage nestled beneath the Great Dividing Range where the landscape turns from bright green to brilliant white with each season.
For decades, he’s been known as the real “Man from Snowy River” — the kind of unapologetic mountain cattleman who could be lifted straight from the pages of Banjo Paterson.
Mr Connelly has roped about 1300 brumbies in his time — at least he thinks so.
He used to document each catch in an exercise book that went up in flames after the fires tore across the ridge lines here in 2003.
