Social media users are tickled pink with Melbourne’s latest selfie hotspot.
The Westgate Lake has had thousands of aspirational influencers, tourists and groups of girlfriends flocking to its banks to preen and pose by the pink water, a phenomenon which occurs due to a perfect mix of high temperatures, sunlight and low rainfall.
“Algae growing in the salt crust at the bottom of the lake produces the red pigment (beta carotene) as part of its photosynthesis process and in response to the extremely high salt levels,” said Phil Pegler, Manager Conservation Planning and Programs at Parks Victoria.
Mr Pegler added while the lake, in Port Melbourne, had become an attraction for social media users, amateur models shouldn’t be tempted to get in the water to achieve the perfect shot.
