A record breaking number of twins have arrived at the Special Care Nursery at Lyell McEwin.
When the sixth set of twins, Phoebe and Noah Price, entered the nursery earlier this month they broke the 2002 record for number of twins in the unit at one time. In the last month the nursery has cared for 11 sets of twins, an extraordinary number for the unit according to Special Care Nursery unit manager Monica Ryan.
“It’s actually really crazy, having so many sets of twins you can’t just say ‘the twins’, you really have to specify,” Mrs Ryan said. “The singleton babies are actually the odd ones out at the moment.”
Mrs Ryan has a unique connection with all the twins, as she and her identical twin, Sonya, were born at the Lyell McEwin.
“I say that they’ve joined my club – ‘the cool twin club’ and it’s a good thing to be a twin born at Lyell McEwin.”
Kym Merchant from Balaklava was surprised to find out she was pregnant with her second set of twins and more so when they ended up with different birthdays. Mason was born at 11.58pm on July 21 and Ava was born at 12.07am on July 22.
“I didn’t think (having twins) would happen twice in a lifetime but it was good and I was really happy,” Mrs Merchant said.
