Who took the dogs out? The answer is increasingly a dog walker as pet owners turn to professionals to exercise their pooches.
Brisbane is the third-largest market for Mad Paws, a start-up that connects pet owners with sitters and walkers.
Spokesman Thomas Derricott said demand in the Queensland capital was growing at the same rate as Sydney.
Bec Thomas of Brisbane-based Fetch Pet Company, which has walkers trained in pet CPR, said owners hired them because they wanted extra exercise and enrichment for their pets while they were at work.

“This way their dog has someone visiting during the day to tire them out, which prevents boredom or anxiety,” she said. “More people are deciding to adopt dogs and puppies now and they want the best for them.
“More businesses are also popping up all over Brisbane as the demand for dog walkers increases – and it’s a desirable job.”
Mr Derricott said it was important to look for people who understood your dog.
“For example, a bulldog may only need a 10-minute walk. A border collie, by comparison, usually won’t be happy with anything less than 8km,” he said.
“If you’re looking to establish yourself as a dog walker, apply the same logic. Instead of simply asking ‘when would you like me to walk your dog?’, dig for as much info as possible.”
