When it comes to making a splash, every dog has his day.
Dozens of dogs are taking to the water for the dock diving championships at the RSPCA Gold Coast Pet and Animal Expo this weekend.
The action-packed sport sees dogs hurl themselves full speed off diving platforms into a pool below with divisions for furthest jump or highest leap.
Kelpie-cattle dog cross Scud is one of the stars on show as the Australian record holder for the extreme vertical leap, with a height of more than 2.23 metres, smashing the old mark by almost 20cm this year.
Raised on a farm at Jacobs Well on the northern Gold Coast, Scud took to the pool like a duck, err, dog, to water.
Owner Darcy Akehurst said Scud was a virtual missile launching off the diving platform. “He’s always loved the water and he’s very competitive so he wouldn’t like the other dogs winning,” he said.
“And he’s a bit of a show-off too.” Any dog owner is free to enter their canine.
