Kelly and Greg Standen’s love story is full of hope and optimism.
The newlyweds can often be found selling the Big Issue in Parramatta and have built up a core following of supporters.
Mr and Mrs Standen both have spina bifida and while they face countless obstacles, Mr Standen does not let it get them down.
“I have to be strong,” Mr Standen said.
“For Kelly and for the both of us.”
Mrs Standen had always wanted a big wedding — including her dream white gown and a horse and carriage — but her dreams were dashed when they received heartbreaking news.
“The doctor pretty much told us that we need to move the wedding up,” Mr Standen said.
“We were planning for October next year and they said make it sooner. I asked if we could do it at Christmas and they said sooner.”
Mrs Standen has syringomyelia and arnold-chiari malformation, a build-up of fluids on the spine and the compression of the brain and the spinal cord.
Doctors were not able to tell Mrs Standen how long she had to live, but she said the penny dropped that something was seriously wrong when the subject of palliative care arose.
“I was devastated,” Mrs Standen said.
“I burst into tears and I didn’t know what was going on.”
The couple were married in a small, intimate ceremony in their backyard in Regents Park in July.
“I still want that big wedding,” Mrs Standen said.
“But it’s all about timing.”
Mr and Mrs Standen’s story is featured in a special love issue of the Big Issue.
“I’ve been giving signatures with the magazine,” Mr Standen said.
“Everyone’s been so lovely and nice about the story and to us, it’s been great.”
