A mother ringtail possum and her two joeys performed a little bit of “possum magic” to escape a sustained bird attack yesterday.
These photos show the female possum suspended on telephone wires 5m above the ground as she comes under attack from fiercely territorial birds. One of her babies clings to her back, with another in her pouch.
The photos, taken by Sydney photographer John Grainger, capture a rare example of possum activity during daytime hours.
“There was at least one magpie and heaps of noisy mynas,” he said.
Luckily, the possum trio was able to safely cross the telephone wire to safety.
Mr Grainger said the female ringtail showed excellent composure throughout the incident.
