Carla Maria Zampatti is an Italian-Australian fashion designer and businesswoman. Zampatti was born in Lovero, Italy in 1942, and moved to Australia in 1950. She started her brand with a small collection in 1965, and national launch followed two years later. In 1973 she opened her first boutique in Surry Hills, Sydney. Over the next three years the Mosman, Double Bay and Elizabeth Street Sydney boutiques were opened, growing the Carla Zampatti Pty Ltd company to create a chain of 30 Carla Zampatti boutiques and concept stores across Australia. In the 1980s Zampatti was made the first Qantas/Bulletin Magazine businesswoman of the year. In a unique partnership with Ford Australia, she became the world's first fashion brand to design a car especially for the female market, which was followed two years later by a second collection of Ford Lasers and Meteors. In the 1994 Zampatti was named 'Fashion Designer of the Year' by the Australian Fashion Industry. She was given the honour of 'Australia Post Legend' in 2005 and was featured on a limited edition stamp. In 2008 she was named Australian Fashion Laureate - the highest honour in the Australian Fashion Industry. In 2009 Zampatti was awarded Companion of the Order of Australia for 'eminent achievement and merit of the highest degree in service to Australia'. She has also held a number of directorships, including Chairman of the SBS Corporation, a director of the Westfield Group and a Trustee of the Art Gallery of New South Wales. In 2015 her brand celebrated 50 years of fashion.
